Char Dham Yatra with Gaumukh Glacier Trek

Gaumukh is the actual source of the Ganga — a glacier face at 3,892 metres that resembles a cow's mouth (Gaumukh), from which the Bhagirathi river emerges. Most pilgrims who visit Gangotri temple see Gaumukh as the next logical step. The 19 km trek from Gangotri to Gaumukh through the Bhojbasa meadow is one of the more accessible high-altitude glacier treks in India — no technical skills required, just good fitness and proper acclimatisation.

This 14-day package completes all four Char Dhams first, then adds the Gaumukh trek as the final leg. The sequence matters: completing the yatra first keeps the pilgrimage aspect primary, and the trek becomes a natural conclusion — the devotee who has taken Ganga jal from Gangotri temple now walks to the glacier that feeds it.

A Forest Department permit is required for the Gaumukh trek (available at Gangotri). The trek includes an overnight stay at Bhojbasa (3,775 m) camp before reaching the glacier the next morning.
