Shakti Temple in Uttarkashi is a sacred and spiritually significant temple dedicated to Goddess Durga, also revered as Shakti—the divine feminine power. Located directly opposite the famous Kashi Vishwanath Temple, this site forms a powerful spiritual center in the heart of Uttarkashi.
The most iconic feature of the temple is its massive Trishul (trident), standing about 6 meters tall. According to local legend, this trident was thrown by the goddess to destroy demons and evil forces. What makes it unique is the belief that no one can move the Trishul by force, but when touched with devotion, it vibrates slightly—a phenomenon many pilgrims experience as divine energy.
Shakti Temple is an ancient temple believed to date back to the early medieval period, deeply rooted in the mythological and spiritual traditions of the region. The most iconic symbol of the temple is the gigantic Trishul (trident), which according to legend, was thrown by Goddess Durga (Shakti) to defeat powerful demons. This trident, measuring nearly 6 meters in height, is made of iron and copper and is revered as a divine relic. Located just opposite the sacred Kashi Vishwanath Temple, the Shakti Temple represents the divine feminine energy (Shakti) balancing the male energy (Shiva), reinforcing the spiritual duality of creation. Its location in Uttarkashi, a spiritual town often referred to as the 'Kashi of the North', makes it a key stop for pilgrims en route to Gangotri or other parts of the Char Dham Yatra.
