Rajaji Tiger Reserve, located near Rishikesh in Uttarakhand, India, is a prominent wildlife sanctuary nestled in the foothills of the Shivalik range. Spanning approximately 820 square kilometers, the reserve encompasses the Chilla, Motichur, and Rajaji wildlife sanctuaries, which were merged in 1983 to form the Rajaji National Park. In 2015, it was designated as a Tiger Reserve, becoming the second in Uttarakhand after Jim Corbett National Park .
Rajaji Tiger Reserve is one of North India's most celebrated wildlife destinations, nestled on the foothills of the Shivalik range near Rishikesh, Uttarakhand. Covering an area of 820 sq km, it is a paradise for wildlife lovers, birdwatchers, photographers, and nature seekers. This protected forest is home to the mighty Bengal tiger, majestic Asian elephants, and over 315 species of birds, making it a unique biodiversity hotspot in Northern India.
Formed by merging Rajaji, Motichur, and Chilla wildlife sanctuaries in 1983, the area was officially designated as a Tiger Reserve in 2015, becoming the second in Uttarakhand after Corbett.
Rajaji Tiger Reserve is named after C. Rajagopalachari, India’s last Governor-General and a prominent freedom fighter. The sanctuary was formed in 1983 by merging three previously established wildlife sanctuaries: Rajaji, Motichur, and Chilla. In 2015, it was declared a Tiger Reserve, recognizing its vital role in conserving endangered species like the Bengal tiger and Asian elephant. The reserve lies in a historically rich region — close to Rishikesh and Haridwar, two of India’s most ancient pilgrimage towns. The Ganges flowing through the forest connects it spiritually and geographically with India's sacred traditions and Vedic heritage.
