A mysterious underground cave shrine in Champawat dedicated to Lord Shiva, Patal Rudreshwar is a hidden spiritual gem surrounded by natural beauty and mythological significance.
Patal Rudreshwar is a sacred cave shrine located near Champawat in Uttarakhand, known for its mythological and spiritual significance. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this mysterious underground temple is believed to be connected to ancient legends and meditative practices of sages. As the name suggests, "Patal" refers to the underworld or subterranean realm, and "Rudreshwar" is another name for Lord Shiva — symbolizing his fierce and meditative form.
The cave is naturally formed and adorned with stalactites and stalagmites, some of which resemble Shiva Lingams. Pilgrims and curious explorers often describe a divine aura within the cave, enhanced by the echoing chants and dripping water from the rocks. A narrow staircase leads visitors down into the cave, where small shrines and natural formations captivate the devotees.
The cave was rediscovered in 1933 by a local boy following a divine vision of Goddess Durga Anecdotes also recount its ‘rediscovery’ in the 1990s by a shepherd and the cave’s opening to wider attention around 1993/1995 . Mythology paints it as a site where Lord Shiva meditated, and local belief links it to the Pandavas’ exile in the Mahābhārata
