Situated at an altitude of 2,312 meters in the town of Mukteshwar, Nainital district, this 350-year-old temple is perched atop a hill, offering panoramic views of the Himalayan peaks, including Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Panchachuli. The temple is believed to have been constructed by the Pandavas during their exile, and its name, "Mukteshwar," signifies "Lord of Salvation," stemming from the legend that Lord Shiva granted salvation (Mukti) to a demon here.
Situated on the banks of the holy Ganga in Hapur district, this sacred site, historically known as Shiva Vallabhapura, is mentioned in ancient scriptures as a place that liberates one from the cycle of birth and death. Legends narrate that Lord Shiva appeared here to grant salvation to his attendants cursed by Sage Durvasa. The temple is also associated with Raja Shibi, who is believed to have consecrated the Shiva Linga here.
Mukteshwar Mahadev Temple is believed to be over 350 years old and holds deep mythological and spiritual importance. According to legends, the Pandavas built this temple during their period of exile. It is said that Lord Shiva appeared here and granted ‘Mukti’ (liberation) to a demon, which is how the place got its name — Mukteshwar, meaning “The Lord of Liberation.” The temple stands atop a hill with panoramic views of the Himalayas and is built in traditional stone architecture with a Shiva Lingam in the sanctum.
