Dehradun's history is deeply rooted in ancient Indian epics. It is believed that Guru Dronacharya, the royal teacher of the Pandavas and Kauravas in the Mahabharata, resided here, giving the city its ancient name, "Dronanagari." In the 17th century, Guru Ram Rai, the eldest son of the seventh Sikh Guru, Guru Har Rai, was exiled for altering a verse in the Sikh scriptures to appease Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. He established his "dera" (camp) in the Doon Valley, leading to the city's name, Dehradun. The Guru Ram Rai Darbar Sahib, founded by him, remains a significant religious site.
