Kheerganga Trek is one of the most enchanting and rewarding treks in Himachal Pradesh, located deep in the Parvati Valley near Kasol. Perched at an altitude of around 2,960 meters, the trek is famous for its mystical beauty, panoramic mountain views, and the natural hot water spring at the summit, which is believed to have healing properties. The destination holds religious significance as it is said to be the meditation site of Lord Shiva’s son, Kartikeya.
The journey to Kheerganga typically begins from Barshaini, a small village that serves as the base camp. The trek route winds through lush pine forests, scenic waterfalls, wooden bridges, and charming villages like Nakthan and Kalga. The 10–12 km hike takes about 4–6 hours, depending on the chosen path and one’s pace.
As you ascend, the landscape transforms from dense woods to expansive meadows with breathtaking views of the snow-capped Himalayas. On reaching the summit, trekkers are greeted by the famous Parvati Kund— a sacred hot spring where many relax and soak after the long hike.
Kheerganga offers a raw and serene experience, with options to camp overnight under the stars. Local cafes and tents provide basic food and stay, adding to the rustic charm of the place.
This trek is suitable for beginners with moderate fitness and is open throughout most of the year, except during heavy snowfall. It’s a perfect escape for backpackers, nature lovers, and those seeking a spiritual retreat in the mountains.
Kheerganga holds immense spiritual importance in Hindu mythology. It is believed to be the place where Lord Shiva meditated for thousands of years and where his son, Kartikeya, also performed penance. The name “Kheerganga” (literally “Milky Stream”) comes from the white, sulphur-rich hot spring that flows through the area, resembling milk. Ancient sages considered this spring sacred and therapeutic. Over the centuries, Kheerganga has remained a hidden spiritual destination visited by wandering monks, local shepherds, and, in recent times, nature-loving trekkers and spiritual seekers.
