Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary has a long-standing presence in the region’s natural conservation narrative. Originally maintained as a reserved forest during the British colonial era, it served as a hunting ground for royalty and officers. Over the years, the forest gained protected status to preserve its rich biodiversity. Its name “Kalatop” translates to “black cap,” derived from the dense, dark cover of deodar trees that shade the hills and give the forest its distinct dark appearance from afar.
