Gurudwara Paonta Sahib is a revered Sikh shrine located in the Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh, beautifully situated on the banks of the holy Yamuna River. It holds immense historical and spiritual significance as it was established by Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Guru of Sikhism, in the year 1685. Guru Gobind Singh Ji spent over four years at this location, a period he fondly recalled as one of the most peaceful and productive of his life. During his stay, he authored many sacred compositions, including parts of the Dasam Granth, such as Jaap Sahib, Akal Ustat, and Chandi di Var. This was also the place where the Guru’s poetry, intellect, and warrior spirit flourished. The name Paonta is believed to derive from the word Paon-Tikka (meaning ‘firm footing’), as Guru Ji decided to halt his journey here and established a Gurudwara to serve the local community. The shrine marks the location of several important events in Sikh history, including the Battle of Bhangani in 1688, Guru Ji’s first military conflict.
The Gurudwara complex includes sacred spots like the Sri Talab Asthan (where salaries were disbursed), Sri Dastar Asthan (where turbans were tied ceremonially), a museum displaying weapons and belongings of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, and a Langar Hall where free meals are served daily to all visitors.
With its white marble architecture, golden domes, spiritual atmosphere, and riverside serenity, Paonta Sahib offers both a devotional and picturesque experience to pilgrims and tourists alike. It is especially popular during Gurpurabs and festivals related to Guru Gobind Singh Ji.
Gurudwara Paonta Sahib is one of the most historically significant Sikh pilgrimage sites in India. It was established by Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Guru of Sikhism, in 1685 when he was invited by Raja Medini Prakash of Sirmaur to stay in his kingdom. Guru Ji set up a camp on the banks of the Yamuna River and built a fort-like residence, which later evolved into this holy Gurudwara. During his time here, Guru Gobind Singh Ji wrote many important compositions from the Dasam Granth, such as Jaap Sahib, Chandi di Var, and Bachittar Natak. It was also from Paonta Sahib that he prepared his Sikh army, the Khalsa, for future struggles. The Battle of Bhangani in 1688, his first military engagement, was led from this very place, establishing his warrior legacy.
