Dodital is a pristine freshwater lake nestled in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand, India. Situated at an altitude of approximately 3,024 meters (9,921 feet), the lake is enveloped by dense forests of oak, pine, and deodar, offering a tranquil retreat for nature enthusiasts and trekkers alike .
The journey to Dodital typically begins from the village of Sangam Chatti, located about 19 kilometers from Uttarkashi. From Sangam Chatti, trekkers embark on a 24-kilometer trail that meanders through picturesque villages like Agora and Bebra, dense forests, and alpine meadows. The trek is considered moderate in difficulty, making it suitable for both novice and experienced trekkers .
Dodital holds immense mythological importance in Hinduism. It is believed to be the birthplace of Lord Ganesha. The name Dodital is derived from “Dhundital,” meaning Lake of Ganesh Ji. As per legend, Goddess Parvati created Lord Ganesha here to guard her while she bathed in the lake. A small Ganesha temple near the lake commemorates this story, making it a site of both spiritual reverence and natural serenity.
