This dam not only supplies electricity through a run-of-the-river hydro scheme but also offers a calm and scenic environment, perfect for nature lovers, bird watchers, and photographers.
Constructed between 1974 and 1980, the dam diverts water from the Ganga River into a 14.1 km long canal to generate 144 MW of clean energy through Kaplan turbines.
Constructed between 1974 and 1980, Chilla Dam is a significant hydroelectric project on the Ganges River. It utilizes a 33-meter drop from Virbhadra to the power house situated near Bhimgoda. The dam includes a 312-meter-long barrage at Virbhadra, diverting water into a 14.1-kilometer-long power channel. This channel feeds into a power house equipped with four 36 MW Kaplan-type turbines, totaling an installed capacity of 144 MW. After power generation, water is returned to the Ganges River via a 1.2-kilometer tailrace channel. The dam is located within the Rajaji National Park, a protected area known for its rich biodiversity, including elephants, tigers, leopards, and numerous bird species.
