Anusuya Devi Temple is a revered Hindu shrine nestled in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, India. Situated at an elevation of approximately 2,000 meters, the temple is dedicated to Goddess Anusuya, the devoted wife of Sage Atri, one of the Sapta Rishis (seven great sages) in Hindu tradition. The temple is accessible via a scenic 6 km trek from Mandal village, which lies about 13 km from Gopeshwar town.
Anusuya Devi Temple, located near Mandal village in Chamoli district, is a sacred shrine dedicated to Goddess Anusuya, the epitome of chastity and devotion. Nestled at an altitude of around 2,000 meters, this temple lies amid the dense Himalayan forests, 13 km from Gopeshwar and 6 km from the trek start point at Mandal.
This offbeat yet spiritually charged destination offers not only divine serenity but also a picturesque trekking route full of natural wonders—gurgling streams, oak and rhododendron forests, and Himalayan birdsongs. Just 2 km ahead lies the peaceful Atri Muni Ashram, believed to be the meditation site of Sage Atri.
Anusuya Devi Temple is deeply rooted in Hindu mythology. It is dedicated to Goddess Anusuya, wife of Sage Atri, one of the revered Sapta Rishis. Legend says that Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva once tested Anusuya’s devotion by asking her to serve them unclothed. Through her spiritual strength and purity, she turned them into infants and fulfilled their request. The deities were so impressed that they blessed her with a divine son—Lord Dattatreya, believed to be the unified incarnation of the Trimurti.
